‘Capital’, the first major solo exhibition in the UK by Senegalese-American artist Coumba Samba, features a room-scale mud installation, photographic prints and a performance entitled ‘FIFA’, created at Ecole Des Sables (Dakar, Senegal). The work explores the circulation of objects, forms, materials and ideologies between the West and West Africa, highlighting defined futures, economic suppression and hope as an event.
FIFA', conceived by Alesandra Seutin (EDS Artistic Co-Director) and imagined by Coumba Samba, draws its inspiration from the repetitive movements of football, Senegalese Lamb wrestling and Queimeda sport.
The marks left in the drying mud act as a double agent: they symbolise both a promise of elusive agency and a machine of desire for absent living bodies.
The sound design was created by artist Gretchen Lawrence (Estonia/UK)
The performers are Fatou Niang (Jant-Bi II/EDS), Nosiphiwo Samente and Alesandra Seutin.
