Alesandra Seutin has been Artistic co-director of Ecole des Sables alongside Wesley Ruzibiza since 2020. Having herself trained with Germaine Acogny at the school, Alesandra Seutin is an ambassador and teacher of the Acogny technique worldwide. Together, Wesley and Alesandra lead the development of the training programme and the internationally renowned performance companies, Jant-Bi Germaine Acogny and Jant-Bi II.
Alesandra trained at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and Middlesex University in London. The world is her muse and, through her creations, she comments on social, political and economic reality through dance, song and music. The notion of ‘getting or taking a place’ is at the heart of Seutin's work, as is finding one's place in major cultural institutions: spaces that are clearly not ‘yours’.
She founded her company Alesandra Seutin (formerly Vocab Dance) in 2007, and has gone from strength to strength, creating artistic performances of the highest quality. Renowned for its theatrical choreography and blend of movement vocabulary, text and dance, the company focuses on exploring subjects that have an impact on our society, captivating its audiences in a compelling and frank dance-theatre journey. Vocab Dance's repertoire is varied, with over eleven productions in its catalogue, ranging from solos to ensemble pieces for indoor and outdoor stages.
Alesandra Seutin's work has toured the UK, Europe and abroad, and she has received over 20 choreographic commissions, including from Sadler's Wells, KVS, Merce Cunningham Company, Wellcome Collection, Channel 4, Phoenix Dance Theatre and National Youth Dance Company.
Always on stage, Seutin recently returned to the stage as performer, choreographer and movement director for Dear Winnie, an award-winning multi-disciplinary performance about the life of Winnie Mandela. She has also been guest director of the UK's National Youth Dance Company from 2019 to 2021. In addition to her work on and off stage in performance and writing, Alesandra Seutin devotes much of her time to mentoring and developing the careers of future generations of makers and creators.
